U.S. News recently compiled their list of the

125 Best Places to Live in the USA.

By analyzing the most populous metro areas, they found the cities with the best value. This meant they needed to be a desirable place to live, have a strong job market and a high quality of life.

Melbourne Statistics

Melbourne, FL Ranked #1

Of all the 125 cities that made the list, the very first city in the state of Florida to make the list was Melbourne. Coming in at #29, Melbourne beat out other Florida hot spots like Sarasota (#34), Fort Myers (#41), Jacksonville (#44), Tampa (#75), and Orlando (#78). Melbourne also came in ahead of cities like San Diego, CA (#30), Charleston, SC (#38), Knoxville, TN (#64) and even Myrtle Beach, SC (#74).

This is big news for a town that few people outside of Central Florida could pinpoint on a map! Melbourne is a metro area situated on the East coast of Central Florida. Just a short 50 mile drive from Orlando, Melbourne is home to families, young professionals and retirees alike. With a thriving tech industry (rumored to have more engineers per capita then Silicon Valley) and a modest cost of living, Melbourne has seen a huge boom in population over the past few years.

Melbourne Launches into the Spotlight

Recent news of Elon Musk and SpaceX launching the Falcon Heavy rocket into space drew national attention to our sleepy little seaside community. With a coastline that stretches for over 150 miles as part of the Indian River Lagoon which separates the “mainland” from “beachside” you are never far from water, whether that be river, lakes or ocean. Nearby legendary surfing hot spot Cocoa Beach, and its neighbor to the North, Cape Canaveral originally put “The Space Coast” on the map long ago, but recent events have brought more and more people here and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

Creativity Abounds

Among the highlights mentioned in the U.S. News report were the bustling arts and entertainment culture. The King Center for the Performing Arts, located at Eastern Florida State College‘s Melbourne campus brings top performers like Jerry Seinfeld, Barry Manilow, Carol King, Celtic Woman, Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons and John Cleese. Science and engineering aficionados can be sure to find interesting events and activities at the top engineering school located in Melbourne – Florida Institute of Technology. Hosting a bustling campus teaming with students from around the globe, you can always find a quiet moment by touring the Botanical Gardens or the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts – a textile museum that features an international collection of rotating public exhibitions. It is the only textile center in Florida, and one of only a handful in the US.

The Cocoa Village Playhouse and the Titusville Playhouse  showcases Broadway-caliber performances of plays and musicals both old and new, while the Eau Gallie Arts Distric (EGAD) is home to multiple art galleries, restaurants and shops. Don’t forget Historic Downtown Melbourne, with it’s picturesque streets lined with eclectic shopping and dining locales, as well as a hearty nightlife at the various pubs and restaurants. With street fairs, wine and food festivals, craft fairs and arts festivals, there is a never a shortage of things to do.

Educating the Future

Melbourne also happens to be within one of the best school districts in the state. Brevard County Public Schools just recently ranked 5th in Florida according to a report by Niche. (Read our blog post about this achievement here) We have a number of public and private high schools, with ten high schools recognized on U.S. News & World Report’s Best High Schools rankings. It is safe to say that Melbourne is a great choice for families with school-age children.

Near or Far – You’re Exactly Where You Want to Be

Probably the best thing about Melbourne, and the Space Coast as a whole, is that we are perfectly situated so that no matter what you’re looking for, you’re never too far away. With the quiet, relaxed beachside lifestyle of our coastal communities like Satellite Beach, Indialantic and Melbourne Beach, we have just what you need to unwind with with your toes in the sand. If you’re looking for nightlife, pop on down to any of our downtown locales for dinner and dancing. Mainland more your speed? Try Melbourne proper, or anything from Titusville on the North end of the county, to Viera or Suntree, Cocoa & Rockledge in Central Brevard, and West Melbourne and Palm Bay to the South. Each city or hamlet has it’s own charms so there is something for everyone!

If you’re looking for a great place to raise your family, the perfect place to retire, or even just a perfect place “just for now” Melbourne and the Space Coast have got you covered.
